La Fortuna, San Carlos.

Since 1968 the area of La Fortuna in San Carlos and the surrounding neighborhood experienced the reactivation of volcanic eruptions in the Arenal Volcano, after having had a last active period around the 1200-1500 centuries B.C. This event threatened an area known as Arenal Hill or Sugar Loaf because people in the zone were not aware it was a dormant volcano disappeared.

After the explosion of the volcano, in 1968, a good part of the local families began to open their homes to house visitors and than an incipient tourist activity began to take place. Later on restaurants and sodas started to come up and then guided visits to the volcano and other touristic attractions began to be offered, to the “Flat Hillâ€, and to the Falls.

The area is of 224.35 square Km. It has a tropical rainy climate which favors agriculture, making of this part of the country one of the most fertile in Costa Rica.It is the most touristic district of the Zona Norte (the northern zone of Costa Rica).

The touristic boom began in the 90´s once the road from La Fortuna to Tilaran was paved. The reconstruction of the road La Fortuna to Ciudad Quesada was finished also, thus facilitating access to this area. This way the necessary conditions were given to have people visit this area: tourism had began for La Fortuna and neighboring places.

Right on the little village of La Fortuna is where all services are concentrated: super markets, pharmacies, bookstores, ice cream fountains, shoe stores, shops, three banks, a clinic, a public school, the necessary government offices and more.

The inhabitants come from all parts of the country; people who fell in love with this beautiful land, where the volcanic eruptions marvel us each day.

Arenal Volcano, the lake, also called Arenal Lake, the Deer Caverns near La Fortuna and countless falls, besides many sites which thermal waters are the reasons for which many tourists come and visit this part of Costa Rica; the hydroelectric reservoir of Arenal is the largest in the country and together with other smaller hydroelectric projects in the vicinity make this area a very important one in the generation of electricity of Costa Rica
